Why These Calculators Exist

Most "AI cost calculators" online are just marketing pages in disguise. These are built to give you a real, usable number — based on actual published pricing, updated as providers change their rates.

💼
For Founders & PMs
Before committing to an AI feature, know exactly what it'll cost at 1,000 users vs 100,000. The Token Cost and Pricing Comparison calculators are built for this exact decision.
📈
For Marketing Teams
The ROI Calculator and AI Writing Speed tool quantify what you already suspect — that AI-assisted content production has a real, measurable payback period.
👩‍💻
For Developers
The Prompt Length Calculator and Context Window Checker help you catch expensive mistakes before they hit your API bill — like a system prompt that's silently eating your token budget.
🧑‍💼
For Operations
Use the AI Budget Planner to track every subscription across your team in one place — most companies are paying for 2-3 overlapping AI tools without realizing it.
How the Numbers Work
01
Token Estimation
We use the ~4 characters-per-token approximation that matches GPT-style tokenizers. This is the same method OpenAI's own documentation recommends for quick estimates — accurate within about 10-15% for English text.
02
Pricing Data
Per-token pricing is pulled from each provider's published rate cards (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google) and manually verified each month (last updated July 2026). We flag the "last verified" date so you know exactly how current the numbers are.
03
ROI Assumptions
The ROI and Writing Speed calculators use your own input numbers — your hourly rate, your actual writing speed — rather than industry averages, because generic benchmarks rarely match your real workflow.
Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is the token estimate?
The 4-characters-per-token approximation is accurate within roughly 10-15% for typical English text. Code, non-English languages, and text with lots of punctuation or special characters tend to use more tokens per character than this estimate suggests. For billing-critical decisions, always check the exact count using the provider's official tokenizer (like OpenAI's tiktoken).
Why do AI providers charge differently for input vs output tokens?
Output tokens (the AI's response) are more computationally expensive to generate than input tokens (what you send), since output requires the model to run inference for each new token. This is why output pricing is typically 3-5x higher than input pricing across all major providers.
Do these calculators account for caching or batch discounts?
Not currently — the Token Cost Calculator uses standard real-time API pricing. Several providers offer 50% discounts for batch processing or prompt caching for repeated context. If your use case involves high-volume batch jobs, your actual costs may be meaningfully lower than what's shown here.
How often is the pricing data updated?
We review and update pricing data monthly, or immediately when we're aware of a provider's rate change. Each calculator that uses live pricing displays a "last verified" note. AI pricing has historically only moved in one direction (down), so using slightly outdated numbers usually means your real costs will be lower than estimated, not higher.
Can I use these calculators for budgeting an entire team?
Yes — the AI Budget Planner is built exactly for this. Add every tool your team subscribes to, set your team size, and it calculates monthly/annual totals with a category breakdown so you can see where the money's actually going.
